Bringing Monte Carlo to the heart of Lemesos
The Cyprus Rally is already one of the world's most exciting motor-sports events, and this year promises to be even more special!
Combining the glamour of F1's Monaco Grand Prix coupled with the no-holds-barred excitement of rallying, the 2006 Cyprus Rally will include a world rallying first - unleashing high-speed rally action onto the winding streets of Lemesos, the lively Mediterranean coastal resort!
Combined with the high-octane excitement of the mountain stages, the first ever Downtown Special promises thrills and excitement unparalleled in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar.
Round 12 of the 2006 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), the Cyprus Automobile Association - organisers of the Cyprus Rally - are determined to keep their event at the cutting edge of rallying, by pushing the boundaries of what has gone before…Hence the Downtown Special (DTS).
Cyprus Rally Clerk of the Course Takis Kyriakides shares the excitement: 'Taking in Lemesos seafront along with the town's medieval castle, old market, and many narrow and winding streets, the 3.5-kilometre Downtown Special, or D.T.S., promises to be fast, exciting and unforgettable'.
Scheduled for 22nd-24th September 2006, this year's Cyprus Rally promises to be another exciting test of man and machine under the warm Mediterranean sunshine. Given its standing as one of the world's most popular holiday destinations - thanks to its wonderful climate and welcoming atmosphere - it will come as no surprise that the Cyprus event has become known as the "Holiday Rally" of the WRC. Fans often combine a holiday in the sun with spectating at this major international sports event - even teams and drivers often bring their families along for a welcome break.
Based around the lively coastal resort of Lemesos with its long beaches, first-class hotels, plentiful bars and restaurants, the 2006 Cyprus Rally will once again see the world's top drivers go head to head on the challenging mountain roads of the Troodos massif. With the DTS adding a dash of all-new spice into the mix…
Costas Lamaris - well known for his exceptional organisation of the successful Acropolis Rally super special stage at the Olympic Stadium- will be a senior consultant for the Lemesos DTS. Held over a 3-hour period, including sideshow events and entertainment, the DTS promises to be a spectacular finale to this year's Cyprus rally. The event will be broadcast live to more than 100 million viewers worldwide.
