Christmas shopping
Christmas shopping in Cyprus can be a fun experience and
it does not have to be expensive. For example check out
the jewellery shops. Many sell a range of unusual pieces
that depict finds of ancient jewellers from the island’s
archaeological sites. Pendants, rings, earrings, bangles
and brooches are made of top quality silver (and gold if
you are feeling generous). The ancient symbols such as
pomegranates and cruciform figurines are also
incorporated into very classy key rings. For more
sophisticated pieces, the island’s jewellery designers
are very creative and you are sure to find something
unusual, if not unique.
If you are shopping for a friend or neighbour who enjoys
food, look for traditional items such as Cyprus honey,
olive oil, carob syrup (great with ice cream!),
preserved fruit, baklava, loukoumi (Cyprus delights) and
carob toffee. Go to the deli counter and seek out Cyprus
cheeses and the locally produced smoked meats.
Pottery and basket ware make great gifts and Cyprus
certainly has plenty to choose from including pottery
replicas of ancient Cypriot archaeological finds. Search
for genuine Cyprus-made products such as colourful round
baskets, traditionally used as a platter or tray but
mostly used as an unusual wall decoration. Many
traditional gifts can be found at the Cyprus Handicraft
Service shops in all towns.
Pafos press trip
The CTO
Dubai office decided to shed some light on one of
Cyprus’s most charming regions which is Pafos, somewhat
forgotten from travellers in the region. A recent trip
was organized for journalists coming from Dubai and Abu
Dhabi to highlight this region and all it offers for
visitors during the winter season.
